In an attempt to secure funds, the Kurou intend to sell the iron foundry to the government. Lead by Tesshin Kurou, the family is resisting the government's attempt to take control of Rokkotsu Pass, however the samurai cannot compete with the modern army. The second faction is the Kurou family, who previously held control in Rokkotsu Pass and continue to exert their influence on the people through extortion and intimidation. The government army is well-funded and equipped with modern weaponry, including firearms and cannons, making them difficult opponents for the former samurai lords. The first is the new centralized government, whose army has been sweeping through the country securing power from the local warlords. Three separate factions are competing for total control of Rokkotsu Pass, each with their own agenda. Rokkotsu Pass is a thinly populated village, whose main attractions contain a railway crossing, a small restaurant, and an iron foundry. The game begins with the player, taking the role of a wandering ronin named Kenji, arriving in a fictional outpost called Rokkotsu Pass. A sequel to this game has been announced.The story takes place in 1878, after the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the start of the Meiji Era, during the Satsuma Rebellion, a time when the samurai who were once at the top of Japanese society are all but outlawed. It wouldn’t be a good Japanese story without one. The story is well written, with a couple of classic twists and betrayal to boot. While the setting is never clarified, the environment and architecture allude to feudal Japan. Players may find scrolls through the levels, which may help them unlock further new techniques and abilities. The objective is to pass through each level as stealthily as possible, at the end performing the only necessary kill, which is the level’s boss.
Players can kill any patrolling enemies in the level from an undiscovered hidden state, although doing so will make sounds to alert nearby enemies. The gameplay is primarily a ninja-like experience (with Aragami even dressing the part), as players need to employ stealth and shadow mechanics to avoid detection.

With the black and white tone of the video game, the aesthetic is that of a samurai movie from older cinema. Once there, the story is completely up to the player, depending on their choice and preferences. Through various chapters, the story sees him try to get revenge on the person responsible for the slaughter of his village, only to fail and end up in the land of Yomi, the afterlife. Set in the Edo period of Japan’s history, Hiroki is a young samurai beholden to an oath he made to his old master.
It is a fixed camera perspective, following the life of a young warrior named Hiroki as he sets out on a voyage to confront the people who destroyed his village.
